[ The Physics class has a lot of homework-- as a doctor, Otome is accustomed to a workload that's bordering on Sadistic, so she isn't too terribly bothered by it. But it also means cramming in studying while she can, and she already has the book open as she walks, so.
... Of course it means she's going to bump into someone, drop the book, and stagger backwards, though she's automatically going-- ]
[Well, he does immediately oof when he's bumped into, doubling over just a little. But he's also carrying the hefty physics book with him, so he understands.]
I did as well. It's, uh, based on a different understanding of the nature of the universe than the one I learned, so maybe nothing will carry over exactly, but it is fascinating to learn all the same.
I might need my own lecture series to answer that question.
[But he's still smiling a little.]
Ah - what's different is my studies focused primarily on the planes adjoining the material plane, which doesn't seem to be either a known quantity or in existence here. No study of the nature of the universe would be complete without understanding the way neighboring planes impact us. The natural laws of the universe are further affected by the existence of divinity and magic, and the history of civilization, which deals primarily with the efforts of arcanists to redirect and rewrite those natural laws.
What planes are you referring to, specifically? Like an astral or spiritual plane? Would that lead to the existence of divinity and the arcane? It's true that Earth tends to treat things like the divine or otherworldly as a matter of belief, moreso than fact, and sciences like chemistry, biology and physics are used to address phenomena...
Where I'm from, magic and possessing spiritual aptitude were fairly well-hidden until recently, for example. Now we've found ways to combine that and technology to make use of both.
Precisely. I wouldn't consider myself a believer of much in particular, I am not a follower of any religion, but where I am from there is no question that magic and Gods exist, as well as creatures of great power somewhere in between mortal magic users and Gods. I have seen it for myself. There is something of a hierarchy where the magic Gods can do is the most powerful, and then beneath that you have creatures like archfey, fiends and celestials, or ancient servants of the Gods. Both can lend some of their power to mortal creatures. But the practice of arcanists such as myself is to harness these powers through knowledge and learning.
The planes are - there are a number of them that circle the plane where we live, Material Plane. The Gods reside in the outer planes and are barred from travel to them, and most powerful creatures of the type I described are also barred but there are ways they can be summoned or come through. The Astral Sea is one such place, as is the Ethereal Plane, and then there are the Elemental Planes, the Abyss, the heavens and the hells, and places like the feywild where fey creatures reside.
... Well, now I really do wish you taught classes! [ with a laugh. ]
It sounds very fascinating. I can understand why the Gods might be banned from intervening and we have something similar in the way of a summoning system when it comes to calling forth... er, well, you might call them fiends... but it sounds as though there'd be a lot to learn!
Week 0, Tuesday

I'm sorry, are you all right??

Ja, perfectly fine. It's engrossing reading.

[ So she'll look him over carefully, just to make sure she didn't like. Bruise him or anything. ]
no subject
Ah, don't worry, it's all okay.
. . . Are you the woman who helped my friend? The purple fellow who was injured?
no subject
My name is Otome.

[Scratching at his chest, a little awkward suddenly.]
Were the classes alright?

Some of them felt a little, ah... juvenile. But I did think the Physics class was actually very interesting!

Would you tell me of your summoning system? I'd be interested to hear about magic coming from other worlds.

[It's definitely not bad to listen to an intelligent person ramble on a little bit?]
